Rashidah on Stanford Law Clinic Panel

On Dec. 12th at 6pm at Laney College, members of the research team of the Stanford Law Clinic, together with Tony and OneFam, pulled together a panel on the prospects for positive police reform in Oakland. The purpose was to host a robust, constructive and forward-looking conversation between panelists and eventually drawing in the audience about what it would take to reform the OPD. The panelists included civil rights attorneys Jim Chanin and Rachel Lederman (NLG), Citizens' Police Review Board Vice-President Sokhom Mao, activist Dereca Blackmon, OPD Sergeant Hookfin and PUEBLO's Director Rashidah Grinage.

The discussion focused on why the Oakland Police Department has experienced such difficulty in embracing reforms and creating a more positive relationship with the community.

The researchers will be publishing their report on the OPD response to the Occupy demonstrations as well as the overall historical context in which those abuses occurred and expect to release it on January 28, 2014.
