Urge Council to Cut Funding of Gang Injunctions
Attend the 2/22 Public Safety Committee Hearing
@ City Hall, 5 pm!!!!!!!!!!!
An abundance of opportunities to engage in developing REAL PUBLIC SAFETY in Oakland are ripe for YOUR participation!
After packing these meetings for months, community members have pressured the Public Safety Committee to take action and put “gang” injunctions on the agenda!
It’s really important for people from every Oakland neighborhood to speak at the hearing. SHOW UP EARLY AT 5PM TO SIGN A SPEAKER’S CARD
You can also sign up to speak online at the City Website
OUR STRENGTH IS IN OUR PRESENCE AND KNOW WE CAN WIN!
Now is the time to keep the pressure on and push our elected officials to stand with us against the injunctions!
We are meeting at 5pm outside City Council Chambers, which is at City Hall in Downtown Oakland, 14th and Broadway, Frank Ogawa Plaza Building. If you need to come late, that is ok - please come!
For more information about the injunctions, check out: Stop the Injunctions Coalition Website
Also, we encourage you to read the reports submitted to the City Council for the meeting: The City Attorney and OPD Report and Stop the Injunctions Coalition Organizers' Report put out by Critical Resistance.
These are the four points of data that the Committee Chair has requested from OPD and City Attorney:
*A comparison of the rates of violence before and after the injunction in North Oakland.
*Costs of preparing & implementing the injunctions (in North & East Oakland).
*How people are selected for inclusion on the list and how they can seek removal from the list.
*How the program is managed.
BACKGROUND: City Council has NOT approved the "gang" injunctions. We want them to see that opposition to gang injunctions is strong and rooted in Oakland. We also want to let them know why we oppose the injunctions and that we, Oakland residents, have our own solutions to violence in Oakland communities. It's really important especially at this moment that we are visible and strong, since the Fruitvale injunction has not yet been passed and the North Oakland injunction continues to be temporary.
